I had the privilege of spending a summer as an environmental educator in the remote Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador Straits. I taught in schools, youth centers and even a lighthouse! Focusing on local birdlife and bats, I was able to incorporate SO MUCH art in my workshops. Alongside teaching kids, we helped to monitor populations of local wildlife, lead species ID workshops, and community clean-ups. It was an extremely rewarding experience and opened my eyes to the importance of community based conservation.
Mural painting
Promoting sea bird conservation in Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon (Quebec, Canada), a community mural was painted on the local general store.
Community members were encouraged to stop by at any point to help paint the iconic species outlined on the store front (and we tempted them with a barbecue).
Painting class
I hosted an evening of learning about local bird life, and taught a class on how to paint two puffins in front of the Île Greenly, one of two migratory bird sanctuaries in the area. The class was by donation, and raised not only funds, but awareness on local wildlife.
